NASA Approved Molicel Batteries 18650 M35A Power Artemis II Lunar Mission

The historic "Artemis II" mission of NASA was launched on April 1, 2026. This was a manned lunar flyby mission after nearly 50 years.—and it relied on a surprising piece of technology: Molicel M35A lithium-ion batteries, the same 18650 cells found in everyday electronics.
The batteries, manufactured by China Taiwan province - based Molicel (a subsidiary of E-One Moli Energy), have earned NASA certification after passing the agency’s rigorous safety screening. Under NASA’s WI-037 screening process—required for crewed spacecraft batteries exceeding 80 watt-hours—the M35A cells underwent comprehensive electrical testing, capacity verification, and defect detection to ensure space-grade reliability.
What makes the M35A particularly valuable for lunar missions is its cold-weather performance. The cells deliver 214 watt-hours per kilogram at -20°C, a crucial capability for operating in the extreme temperatures of deep space.
“The M35A is a strategic component of NASA’s Artemis II mission,” said Michael Mo, CEO of KULR Technology Group, the company supplying the cells for space applications. KULR maintains a “golden lot” of these cells, each fully traceable with comprehensive screening data, lot numbers, and serial numbers—ensuring the highest quality standards for human spaceflight.
The 9-day mission, which splashed down on April 10, 2026, carried astronauts farther from Earth than any human has traveled in half a century. It served as a critical test for NASA’s Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket, paving the way for future lunar surface missions and eventual journeys to Mars.
Behind the historic flight, the Molicel M35A batteries worked quietly in the background—proving that sometimes, the most reliable space technology starts with an off-the-shelf cell.
