Breakthrough Promises to End EV Range Anxiety: 12-Minute Charge for 800 km
Release Time:
2025-12-23
A research team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and LG Energy Solution has announced a major breakthrough that could redefine electric vehicle ownership. They have developed a new liquid electrolyte for lithium-metal batteries that simultaneously tackles the long-standing challenges of safety, energy density, and ultra-fast charging. Their key achievement is solving the "dendrite" problem, where needle-like lithium growths cause short circuits and safety hazards, especially during fast charging. The new electrolyte ensures uniform lithium deposition on the anode, effectively suppressing dendrites. Lab results are striking: a battery can charge from 5% to 70% in just 12 minutes and achieve a single-charge range of 800 kilometers (about 500 miles). While still in the laboratory stage, this development points to a future where EV charging times could rival refueling a gasoline car.
